PROJECT EXPERIENCE, WATER TREATMENT CONSULTING / DESIGN:
CONNACHER OIL AND GAS, Algar & Great Divide SAGD Projects (2006/2008). Water Treatment Specialist responsible for the water treatment plant design for a 10,000 BOPD SAGD facility. Water treatment consists of oil removal water treatment and boiler feedwater treatment (steam generation) for the application using thermal treatment of produced water to produce high quality demin feedwaterfor a packaged boiler. Produced water treatment system will have an evaporator waste water treatment component allowing a minimum waste volume discharge. Process design for water treatment facility. Bid specifications preparation and bid review for all water treatment plant unit operations (De-oiling and BFW treatment). Study and Design review of waste water treatment alternatives (ZLD and other) – technical and cost evaluation. Commissioning and start up for water treatment plant. Review and consultation for all process and specialty chemical programs.
NEXEN INC. Long Lake South Phase 1 & Long Lake Debottlenecking SAGD Projects (2006). Team Lead, NEXEN Water Management Team, in charge of leading a water treatment review and study for a major expansion (Long Lake South Phase 1) which involves all aspects of produced water treatment – preparation for OTSG boiler feedwater as well as design for all waste streams (liquid blowdown and solids to landfill). Study comprised of evaluating evaporative water treatment of produced water compared against hot lime softening and ion exchange using Weak Acid Cation resin. Final steam generation configuration consisted of comparing OTSG’s and drum boiler technology. Study rolled forward to NEXEN doing a comprehensive economic analysis. Study and Design was for a 70,000 BOPD SAGD facility. Other work involved training and start up preparation for the Long Lake Phase 1 Commercial and Debottlenecking projects, reviewing technology studies on behalf of Nexen and water treatment equipment design. CONOCO PHILLIPS, Surmont Phase 2 Commercial SAGD Project (2005/2006) Water Treatment Specialist responsible for the Water Treatment Design and Water Treatment Conceptual Study evaluating proven and emerging technologies as they apply to SAGD produced water, OTSG blowdown and make-up water treatment. A detail review of the costs and application was undertaken for processes that treated produced water with moderate to high total dissolved solids (TDS), including:
1. RO treatment of produced and brackish water. Ro treatment technologies studied include HERO, High temperature RO (GE Water) and a vibratory RO system (V-Sep).
2. Thermal treatment (evaporator and crystallizer) for produced water and OTSG blowdown.
3. Warm (conventional and DensaDeg ® ) and hot lime softening technologiesfor OTSG’s.
4. Lime softener waste sludge alternatives (landfill vs. centrifuge dewatering).
DEER CREEK ENERGY LTD, Joslyn SAGD Project, Phases 1, 2 and 3A. (2003 - 2005). Water Treatment Specialist responsible for a major study to compare warm lime softening / OTSG process vs. Evaporator / Package Boiler process. Also responsible for the water treatment plant design for a 10,000 BOPD SAGD facility (phase 2) and 15,000 BOPD (phase 3A). Final design configuration for water treatment process consists of oil removal water treatment (deoiling plant) and boiler feedwater treatment (steam generation) for a novel application using thermal treatment of produced water to produce a high quality feedwater for a packaged boiler (first commercial plant to use a drum type packaged boiler using produced water as feed). Produced water treatment is a zero liquid discharge facility.
Brackish (saline) water study to look at the feasibility and application with current water treatment design and use in future expansion. Basal water study to look at design and economics of treatment alternatives for process reuse and waste stream disposal options for oil sands mine. Supervision of pilot trials of novel water treatment processes. Pilot systems tested include a novel RO process as well as a new specialized produced water de-oiling technology. Evaporator Pilot study work for wastewater / ZLD plant application.
BLACKROCK VENTURES, ORION SAGD Project (2004/2005). Water Treatment Specialist responsible for the conceptual review and study for produced water treatment plant alongside steam generation for SAGD wells. Also responsible for the FEED design basis for deoiling plant and boiler feed water treatment plant. Completed water treatment study evaluating evaporator produced water treatment vs. conventional Hot Lime Softening and WAC Ion Exchange. Study included comparing steam generation technologies alongside the water treatment options evaluated. Bid specification preparation and bid evaluation for stem generation boiler feedwater water treatment system.
ENCANA - Cavalier Power Station Water Treatment Retrofit Project. Process Lead for a combined cycle power plant water treatment plant retrofit. The heart of the water treatment equipment retrofit was the HERO reverse osmosis system (High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis). Other equipment and process incorporates multi media filtration pre-treatment and secondary HERO system for treating wastewater.
CONOCO PHILLIPS, Surmont Phase 1 SAGD Project Water Treatment Specialist responsible for the Conceptual Study evaluating proven and emerging technologies as they apply to SAGD produced water, OTSG blowdown and make-up water treatment. A detail economic review (netpresent value) of technologies evaluated for water treatment and waste water reuse (zero liquid discharge). Results of the study were put forward as conceptual design for the FEED and Detail Design Phases of the project. Responsible for the process design of produced water re-use system for a 3600 m 3 /day oil (10,000 m 3 /day produced water) SAGD plant. Water treatment consists of oil removal (skimming, floatation and filtration) and softening (warm lime softening, filtration and weak acid cation exchange) to allow produced water re-use as feedwater to once-through high pressure steam generators for enhanced oil recover.
